One of the most critical roles of SCLS is to assist member libraries adapt to new technologies. The incredible growth of the Internet and the ever increasing demand for access by libraries and their patrons has challenged SCLS to offer member libraries a variety of "on the curve" Internet related services. These include the development of a county-wide digital telecommunications network, SuffolkNet, SuffolkWeb and a wide range of training and consulting services.

Our goal is to assist member libraries continue their role as information providers to the community as we move rapidly into the digital age. An essential part of this vision is to continue the library tradition of providing free access to information for all residents of our communities.

SuffolkNet
SuffolkNet was created in 1995 to provide member libraries and their patrons inexpensive access to the Internet from the library or from home. At first only text access was available. Eventually graphics and the World Wide Web became its most popular feature. SuffolkNet is intended as a research and learning tool and, as such, is not a full service Internet provider (ISP). Today, over 100,000 Suffolk residents access the Internet from their home or business through SuffolkNet, usually starting from their library's home page. It is the largest service of its kind in the country.

SuffolkWeb
The purpose of SuffolkWeb is to provide easy access to research materials available on the World Wide Web. SCLS works with member libraries to develop the best possible "home page" for each community. These are backed up by the SCLS SuffolkWeb page, an easy to use guide to a wide variety of Internet resources. These free resources compliment the subscription-based services available through the Virtual Reference Collection. The SuffolkWeb Help Desk and FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions) are also available on the SuffolkWeb Home Page. Numerous Suffolk County library professionals devote their time and efforts to develop and maintain this important research tool.

Telecommunications Network
SCLS has installed and now manages one of the largest educational telecommunications networks in the Northeast. Member libraries are connected to each other and the world at large by over 110 high-speed (56kps to T-3) digital lines. SCLS staff oversee the installation and management of this network on a day-to-day basis and help member libraries get the most out of this critical technology.
