HUMAN RESOURCES - Continuing Education Units (CEU's)

Q. What is CEU?
A. CEU stands for Continuing Education Unit. It is the credit assigned to workshops of an educational nature, usually designated in tenths. For example: a 3 hour program would bear .3 CEU credits.

Q. Who can get the credit?
A. Anyone who attends a credit bearing program. When a person registers or signs in at the workshop, that person will be asked to supply his/her social security number if CEU credits are desired.

Q. If a social security number is not supplied, what happens?
A. No CEU credit will be recorded for that individual.

Q. Who keeps track of CEU credits?
A.
A master list is maintained at the Suffolk Cooperative Library System by Angie Lehner. The list has been kept since September 1987 and contains information pertaining to staff in Suffolk public libraries only.

Q. How can I find out if I have CEU credits?
A.
Simply call Angie at 286-1600 and ask for a transcript. You will be required to supply your social security number.

Q. Who determines what is or isn't a credit-bearing program?
A.
There are specific guidelines that determine whether a program qualifies for CEU credits. Angie Lehner can supply that information.

Q. What groups offer CEU credits?
A.
SCLS, SCLA, or other groups offering training programs to members of Suffolk's public libraries.

Q. What are CEU credits used for?
A.
CEU credits are not the same as credits earned for college courses. However, they do indicate that a person has spent a particular number of contact hours to further their education and may be used as part of continuing education experience when taking exams.

If there are any other questions regarding CEU's, please feel free to call Angie Lehner, SCLS, 286-1600.
