ADMINISTRATION & BUSINESS
Among the highest priorities of the Suffolk Cooperative
Library System is to assist member library administrators to respond
effectively to the varied and complex management issues of today. In addition
to the responsibility for the administration of System operations, service
programs and financial affairs, the SCLS management staff is a highly
experienced library consulting team. Assistance and information is available on
all aspects of public library service. SCLS is also responsible for the
administration of several county-wide cooperative and contractual
agreements between members, local school districts and outside agencies.
Director/Assistant Director
Responsible for the overall administration of SCLS, the
System Director and Assistant Director also offer direct consulting services to
member libraries. Particular strengths include Trustee relations, long range
planning, personnel management, municipal finance, construction and all aspects
of library automation. The SCLS administration also offers practical advice to
librarians on Civil Service matters and legislative initiatives on the
regional, State, and Federal levels.
Business Manager
All institutions must be concerned with cost effective administration and SCLS is no exception. However, the Business Manager at SCLS also serves in a similar advisory capacity to our member libraries by sharing expertise in areas such as telecommunications, facility maintenance, finance, employee benefits, bidding and procurement, insurance and risk management, and governmental regulations.
Resource Sharing
SCLS is responsible for the administration of the Resource Sharing Code for Interloan and Direct Access. This includes the maintenance of delinquency files and the administration of contracts for library service in the unserved areas of the County.
Delivery Service
The daily delivery of materials between member libraries is one of the most visible
services offered by SCLS. This is a critical element in our cooperative effort
to provide the finest possible library service to the people of Suffolk County.
More than three quarters of a million items are transported annually. In
addition to the many thousands of books, videos, tapes, exhibits and other
library materials, SCLS serves as a conduit for several adult education
(GED/ESL) programs.
Print Shop
The Print Shop is a self contained reproduction department responsible for the
production of various forms of graphic communications. Newsletters, booklets,
manuals such as SuffolkNet and SuffolkWeb, flyers and memos are designed and
printed specifically for distribution to member libraries. Laminating and binding equipment are available for use at SCLS by member library
staff. Though the primary function of the Print Shop is to support the printing
requirements of SCLS, in recent years it has offered its services to member
libraries for a reasonable fee. This has resulted in a cost effective service
for member libraries and additional revenue for SCLS.
