WYANDANCH COMMUNITY NEWS

Wyandanch Resident Publishes Autobiography

Word for Word Publishing Co. Inc. recently published the autobiography of longtime community member Grace Dyer. "The Tattered Quilt" recounts the life of Grace Dyer who is an evangelist, prophetess, wife, and mother of six children. She and her husband, Ruby, minister to young adults in the Wyandanch Community. Those experiences lend to her ability to effectively minister to the needs of this special young adult population.

We recommend you read "The Tattered Quilt"

Our congratulations are extended to Artist, Eric Roberson, whose illustration adorn the cover of "The Tattered Quilt".

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Award.

Gates Library Computers were recently awarded to the Wyandanch Public Library through a grant received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Each of the five computers was designed specifically to be placed in public libraries throughout the United States. One of the five computers received, is a Spanish Language model. The computers provide direct Internet Access, and contain a wide range of programs for both adults and children. The computers are equipped with tutorials which explain program features and make  them easy to use. Depending upon the task at hand and the age of the user, program choices cam be limited to those needed to complete that specific project. All work can be printed using the printer shared by the five computers.

Spanish speaking Patrons Response:

The addition of the Spanish Language Computer has been an invaluable asset to the Hispanic Community. It is an important component of our mission to make all of our residents feel welcomed in the Library. Parents are role models for their children as they take full  advantage of all library services. Our English as a Second Language adult students are empowered because they have access to a media that many never imagined would be freely available to them. The integration of audio and video enables every level of student to benefit.

 Director's Comments:

With the addition of these Computer Work Stations, we have noticed a tremendous increase in the number of people coming into the library. Once reluctant adults are now freely maneuvering the Internet or producing professional quality documents. They are also spending time with their children on the computer, a job made easier because each unit comes with a dual headphone set.

We at the Wyandanch Public Library thank Bill and Melinda Gates who made all of this possible through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
