Special instructions for accessing the Virtual Reference Collection (VRC) with a Mac.
The Mac OS does not permit the type of automatic configuration script used to authenticate Suffolk Web users when they are connected to a different Internet Service Provider (ISP).
The following workaround will permit Mac users to be authenticated for VRC access. Unfortunately we have no exact procedures for Netscape, but the concepts remain the same.
1. Open Internet Explorer
2. Edit
3. Preferences
4. Web Browser ->Web Content ->confirm Enable ActiveX is checked
5. Network Protocols ->Proxies
Place a check for Web Proxy and enter tank.suffolk.lib.ny.us
Settings
Ports = 80
Method = Normal
No username or password
No check for 'Use proxy....'
OK
No other items should be checked, though tank.suffolk.lib.ny.us might be
greyed out in the other proxy boxes.
OK
When you press the Home icon, Internet Explorer will start to go to your homepage but will be deflected to the VRC Gateway Realm requesting your SuffolkWeb username and password. Once entered and confirmed, you will then go to your normal homepage and can go anywhere on the Internet, including all VRC products.
Each time you open Internet Explorer you will be prompted for your SuffolkWeb username and password. To avoid this, you can go into Preferences and uncheck the Proxies setting and restart Internet Explorer. Anytime you want to use the VRC, then go back in and re-check the Web Proxy box and restart Internet Explorer.
